| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The Curse of the Daleks is an ambitious full-length adaptation of the first Doctor Who-related stage play, which ran at Wyndham’s Theatre, London, from 21 December 1965 to Saturday 15 January 1966. Fifty years after the deactivation of the Daleks, a spaceship from Earth is forced to land on Skaro following an act of sabotage... but who aboard the ship would want to come to Skaro and for what terrible purpose? Below is an extensive selection of shots and sets from this production, which is now available. Click here to order your copy. | |

| |
| | | | The storage hold of the spaceship Starfinder. Apparently, according to David Whitaker’s script, it’s a Monday in December and the year is 2179 AD. |
 | | | Sline and Ladiver are chained in the hold. They while away the long hours trying to cut through the chains with a file that they thoughtfully remembered to bring with them. |
 | | | Captain Redway pays a visit to his prisoners. He’s the sort of man who’d probably trudge all the way down to the hold, kick the prisoners for pleasure, then trudge all the way back to the bridge whilst moaning about what a long walk he’d had. |
 | | | Rocket Smith in the hold. How he came by a name like that is anyone’s guess... |
 | | | Bob Slater brings lunch for the prisoners. It probably consists of nothing more than space bread and space water, though there’s always the possibility of space buns for pudding. |
 | | | Another shot of Bob Slater, here being offered lots and lots of money by Ladiver. I wonder what his answer will be... |
 | | | A view of the courtyard set. In the script, the spaceship hold would have been in front of the stage curtain and this set would have been behind the stage curtain. This would allow for a speedy change of scene. |
 | | | Another shot of the courtyard. According to the script, it is a Tuesday in December in 2179 AD when the spaceship crew arrive here. Makes you wonder what they’ve been doing for a whole day. Searching for a parking space? |
 | | | Professor Vanderlyn, a passenger aboard the Starfinder, together with Captain Redway, enter the courtyard. |
 | | | Marion Clements, the Professor’s frosty research assistant. Of course, this being the 1960s, all she actually needs is the love of a good man. So that’s all right then. |
 | | | Vanderlyn investigates the deactivated Dalek while Redway gets short shrift from Miss Clements. |
 | | | A portrait of Professor Vanderlyn... and something rather unpleasant just behind him. |
 | | | A test render of the Daleks in their viewing chamber. Again, this scene was intended to be played in front of the curtains. |
 | | | The Dalek main control. This set is specified in the script as a redress of the courtyard set, so for the sake of accuracy, that’s exactly what I’ve done. Keeps the imaginary cost of those imaginary sets down too... |
 | | | Rocket gets tough with a great big black gun. |
 | | | The Daleks arrive - at last! |
 | | | Captain Redway with a Dalek. This one is deactivated. You can tell from its droopy appendages. Apparently. |
 | | | Sline and Ladiver, two convicts on their way to Earth for trial. Considering he faces the death sentence when he gets there, Sline is looking surprisingly chipper. Ladiver isn’t. |
 | | | As darkness falls, a Dalek appears. Could this be curtains for our intrepid space travellers or merely the end of a scene? |
 | | | Bob Slater marches Ladiver and Sline into the courtyard of the Dalek city. Apparently they’d roast if he left them aboard the ship. I like roast. |
 | | | Dexion - devilishly butch leader of the Thals and one of the few men in the civilised galaxy who doesn’t look completely silly wearing black spandex. Possibly. |
 | | | The Daleks prepare to plug a very large plug into their hidden power source. |
 | | | Someone always gets sick on these foreign holidays, don’t they? In this case it’s Redway who doesn’t look to well after a run-in with the locals. |
 | | | The Black Dalek and his minions. |
 | | | The Black Dalek takes control. |
 | | | Ijayna and Marion are separated from their menfolk... |
 | | | The women are chained to large boards. I guess it will take a man to rescue them in typical 60s style... |
 | | | The Black Dalek awaits the villain of the piece! |
